Character Information
Name: Rynlan Dawnslight
Canon: World of Warcraft. don't look at me
Age: ~145
Canon Point: roughly current Warcraft canon, with no current ongoing war between Aliiance and Horde forces-- he's retired from combat and adventuring so I get to ignore the game plot, it's fine.

Background: okay. So the background you need about elves is this: ancient elves were super magical and super mortal, a bunch of magic bullshit happened and Demon Invasion occurred which led to the elves splitting off and also losing their immortality. The ones who refused to give up arcane magic and go become one with nature became high elves, who were allied with humans for a while but eventually withdrew to their homeland and became more or less isolationist (which is roughly where it starts mattering, he was a young adult during this period). Then several years ago, the undead army invaded the high elves' lands to get at their source of magic and defile it, they took out most of the high elves as well as tainting their magic source, and without the magic source they realized how addicted they were to it. Their leader Kael'thas renamed the survivors blood elves and fucked off to go try to find them a new source, since they were all physically dependent on magic and beginning to suffer over not having it. He found demon energy! It went badly! A lot of blood elves did a lot of fucked up things in the name of preserving their reduced population but eventually Kael'thas was killed, the elves were able to purify their magic source and stabilize, and the blood elves are a part of the Horde now. Several wars happened, including one against the undead army and the Lich King, we're not going into detail there. Then a group of blood elves decided hey, we should keep looking into alternate magic sources, let's study the void! These guys got exiled because their current leaders were like 'no, absolutely not, we did demon magic once and it was bad so we are NOT doing void magic, fuck off out of here.' Those elves went to the void anyway, got corrupted and became void elves (Warcraft elves are kind of like Eevees), got rescued, and the Alliance has taken them in so now they're allied with humans again.

SO. Ryn specifically. He started off as a combat healer, trained to use the Light to heal by human priests, but had no problem breaking the alliance with the other high elves to return home. He continued to heal along with his partner, Aren, and both lost the majority of their families in the undead attack on the elven capital; Rynlan struggled far more with his dependency on magic than Aren did, but managed not to lose himself and to survive through joining up with the Horde (though he very nearly joined their leader's forces who were pursuing demon magic, only held back by Aren being a voice of reason.) After things stabilized a bit, their magic source was restored, and the Alliance and Horde forces decided to take the fight to the undead, the two of them joined a neutral organization called the Argent Dawn (which developed into the Argent Crusade during the war) in order to go get revenge for their people and prevent the undead from wrecking other civilizations. Aren was killed in a skirmish in undead territory, along with most of their unit; Rynlan was one of two survivors, and was injured badly enough that even healing magic couldn't fully restore his injuries. He has a prosthetic leg and still suffers from chronic pain and reduced strength/stamina/general physical capability, as a result of the inability to fully reverse the damage done by the plagues the undead carried.

After that, he essentially lost it with grief for a while, was forced to retire from combat healing, and ended up spending more time focused on what were previously side jobs: alchemy and writing. He did a lot of experimenting to develop potions and other concoctions to control his pain and other symptoms, wrote a lot of books and picked up his old pen name again; before everything went to shit with the undead he was a well-known romance novel author, and he made a name for himself in it again. He lived alone with his cats, threw himself into everything he could to distract himself, and while he never returned to combat, he did return to practicing magic. Rynlan abandoned the Light and healing, turning to Shadow magic instead for the power it could offer him in hopes that it could compensate for his physical condition. This led him to joining the group of elves studying the Void, the source of Shadow magic-- he was exiled along with their group and they all ended up corrupted within the rift, physically changed by the influence of the Void. Since then, he's been working with them to learn how to manage things like their new shadow powers, the constant whispers of cosmic horrors in their heads and the multitude of future possibilities the voices see, you know, normal stuff.

Personality: Rynlan is a deeply normal guy who is not at all focused on his image and being seen as a person with no deep issues. He is perfectly fine and always has been.

He lies to himself constantly, trying to give the impression he doesn't care while he actually cares very much and, largely, ignoring his problems. He has terrible coping mechanisms and refuses to listen when he's told they're bad, he has too much pride and is overconfident in what he's capable of and can manage, and he handles loss so badly that he's had twelve cats in his life, all the same breed with the same name. Ryn's a vain person and his injuries were a difficult thing to recover from, after priding himself for decades on having no scars or other marks as a healer; he sees them as a sign of failure, always wears layers that cover as much of himself as possible, but will still talk up his own attractiveness despite having removed all the mirrors from his house.

He does still have decent qualities, though. When he does care for someone, he'll do a lot for them, and while he makes his living off his alchemy along with his writing, he'll still provide medical help for anyone who needs it; he may not use magical healing anymore, but after what he's been through, he'll still help prevent suffering where he can. It's not something he wants to see more of. He wants to make himself useful; as misguided as his pursuit of power has been, and despite it definitely having been driven as much by selfishness, there was still a desire in there to make himself stronger so that he would be better able to help his own people. It's just that, you know, he went about it in a way that led to corruption and exile, but he still does what he can for his fellow void elves.

Motivations: Power! He wants power, for various reasons: to improve himself and compensate for his physical shortcomings, to help his fellow void elves in their struggle with their corruption, to generally just be able to do whatever he wants. He's already gone a little too far pursuing it, but will that stop him? No. And while he's a former healer who's seen enough shit in the world... he's not exactly a pacifist, and he was still a combatant as well. He's killed before and would do it again, if he thought it would get him what he wants. He'd hesitate, if he cared about a specific person, but if the risk was worth it? He'd do it.

Powers: As a Shadow priest, Rynlan specializes in offensive magic that attacks a target's psyche. Shadow priests take on a shadowy form to boost their power with associated spells, and as a void elf, he has a deeper connection to this type of magic, as Shadow magic originates in the Void. Also, as a void elf, he's had to constantly resist the whispers they hear due to their connection to the rift, promising them more power and anything they might want.

-Shadowform: he wraps himself in a shadowy aura, boosting his power with shadow/void magic and making it easy to blend into the dark.
-Void Tendrils: summons shadowy tentacles to snare enemies in a radius around him.
-Mind Blast: a direct offensive spell that attacks the mind.
-Shadow Word Pain: a spell that causes damage over time, which I translate as just being a slow-burn, longer lasting pain.
-Void Eruption: a blast of void energy around him that twists his form, giving him even greater affinity to the void. This form has shadow tentacles as a default and that's on Blizzard, not me.
-Void Shift: swaps his health with the target's. For rp purposes this is basically injury swap, to take on others' wounds or give them his.
-Mindgames: twists a target's perception of reality. Any damage they do heals their target, and any healing they do causes damage.
-Shadowfiend: summons a creature from the Void to help defend him. 'Does it also have tentacles,' you may wonder. 'Does this specialization have a particular aesthetic.' Yes! It does.

This is basically what Shadow Priest spells are like. Void Elf abilities include the ability to tear a rift for a short teleport, and occasional empowerment with Void energy while they're fighting.

Moral Alignment: Chaotic neutral. He's out for his own goals, and his loyalty shifts by necessity, particularly after exile from his own people; he's got his own methods and isn't out to go against society or anything, but he'll do what he must to get what he wants or needs, and 'his people' are whoever he decides they are.

Measurements:
Height: 6'3" (6'7" including the ears)
Weight: Too thin.
Hand/foot size: Both smaller than you would assume based on his height; he's always had a slight build. Average instead of large.

Hair/Eye color:
Hair: it's dark blue, almost purple, and fades into a glowing blue-purple gradient at the ends. Some of his hair isn't hair, but tentacles.
Eyes: Glowing blurple.

Home Item: A steamy romance novel.

Death: Hubris. He hasn't canonically died, but for game purposes: he took things too far in his pursuit of Void mastery, attempted to pull too much power from the rift, and was no longer able to resist the intensified whispers of the void gods. Rynlan caved to their promises and was overtaken by his magic, losing himself (and probably causing collateral damage, though he has no idea if he did or not) before the instability killed him. At least not having his powers means this totally won't be a problem! Unless he gets any void magic back.

What the Hell?: He's here because of both the aforementioned incident, and for turning his back on the Light in his previous crisis of faith; he gave up healing because he decided the traditional ideals of the Light were hypocritical, and prioritized power over continuing to save lives. He tends to prioritize his feelings and his problems over others, instead, which does not help.
