The same thing happens faster with heavy infusions of different types of magic. For example, high elves who consume enough demonic energy quickly become demonic, just like they would if they had slowly absorbed that energy over decades. For us... it was shadow.

More or less. It's just not often that it happens fast enough to actually change an individual within their own lifetime. Happened all at once in our case, though.
